i am not afraid I was born to do this

i am not afraid *

Of all the bracelets we sell…this one is one of the ones that people will panic about the most if they lose it.  I know because I get the emails.  It has become a personal mantra to get them through their tough times or overcome their struggles and try to realize their dreams.

It is etched with one of my favorite quotes from Joan of Arc“I am not afraid, I was born to do this.”

Does it really get any better than that? Sometimes that is just the reminder you need to put your fear aside and just move forward. So often we get stuck in a comfortable place and have a hard time moving past it to where our dreams lie. This bracelet can help…at least I have been told!

believe in angels*

This blog has been a little quiet lately. I would like to say that life got a little hectic and crazy and I didn’t have time to post…but that wasn’t really the case. For me life pretty much stopped in its tracks.

I awoke on Thanksgiving Day unable to walk and in excruciating pain. My left leg was paralyzed and I was told that I would need emergency back surgery.  I went from being a very active person to not even being able to lift my head to drink out of a straw. I was staring down the barrel of a four month recovery at the very least…if I recovered at all. Those of you that have gone down the scary road of back surgery know that it is not a guarantee of anything. I had to relearn how to walk, right down to the baby step basics.

I was so blessed to have an amazing and strong husband who not only took care of me, a farm, two horses but also got my business through the Christmas holiday. My employees were amazing and I felt so very blessed to have them as they truly function as one big amazing team. Everyone pitched in and did what it took to get the job done.

And a big grateful thanks to my friends who came over every afternoon in the dead of winter to help with the horses. And my in-laws and mother who cooked and baby sat me.

They were all truly angels. With wings and hearts of gold. You better believe I wore my Rise Above Bracelet a whole lot.

I am better and walking now. And riding my horses who got a little fat and sassy. And beginning the new summer collection. You better believe that it is gonna be a whole lot about gratefulness, gratitude and love. xoxo

shine on purple rain*

Rest in peace, my friend. He was a force of nature, a shining light of musical brilliance and really did see the world through purple colored glasses.
He had a nightclub near mine in Miami…and would come into our club with a cane & his crazy outfits that only he could wear…and I would make him Kahlua & cream…shaken like a milkshake. It had to be made just so. He never really drank it…he would just let it get warm and I would bring him another.
He was funny, eccentric, surprisingly shy and kind. He loved to watch the club chaos and was a great observer.
I had the honor of attending his birthday one year at his nightclub, Glam Slam which was an old theatre. He played non stop on stage until 3am…I have never seen anyone so talented or musically brilliant in my life. Or since then.
You will be missed by all. We lost one of the great ones…

breast cancer bracelet hope bracelet

breast cancer awareness jewelry…hope is stronger than fear*

October is Breast Cancer awareness month everywhere…especially here at Island Cowgirl. My mother is a Breast Cancer survivor so it really is a cause close to my heart. She was one of the lucky ones that managed to survive and thrive. My mom lost her mother to cancer when she was only 52 so it was a very frightening legacy to bear. Millions of other women have the same stories…

…where are the cowgirls at?…

Every woman has a cowgirl side, whether its out there in the open or some where deep inside their heart.

Because being a cowgirl is about so much more then just riding horses, and knowing the lay of the land. It’s about the strength that comes from the soul, as tough as boot leather when times get rough. Having humility from knowing you’re just a small part of a much grander plan. It is when a woman feels a wide open space and is comfortable with where she stands.

(Pictured above is our ‘Cowgirl at Heart Necklace‘…)

The is so much inspiration to be found in the country life style, from the iconic lucky horseshoe symbol, to the classic mantras of old time cowgirls… like, “worship your wild soul“…. “always saddle your own horse” and so many more… sayings to live by and learn from!

…fear vs. love…

…Bali…Sept 2012

On my mind lately…Fear vs. Love
Every so often…or pretty much quite often…we get off track. Fear creeps in and takes over. It is sneaky. Devious. You don’t even see it coming…and one day you wake up and it becomes clear.
And you ask yourself…am I living my life out of fear or love. Am I basing my decisions out of fear or love…And most of the time…I already know the answer.

“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” ~John Lennon

You said it John.

…a H.O.R.S.E. rescue update…

h.o.r.s.erescue

Have you seen our featured ‘H.O.R.S.E. Rescue’ page on our website?

We have been featuring horses from an organization called ‘H.O.R.S.E. Rescue’ for the past several months. These horses were all up for adoption to good homes and/or sanctuaries. The Organization was founded by a man and wife who had a serious goal to find care and compassion for these beautiful creatures… These horses were all in desperate need of a big heart, willing to take on the responsibility of a special needs horse. In early 2012 they received news that would change their ability to run this amazing rescue…this was Mike’s final statement released to their website…

“It is now August 2012 and has been almost a year since my cancer diagnosis. Since my last ct scan last month things are still going. My lung cancer is still stable and the only thing that’s changed is a tumor on the adrenal gland. That one has doubled in size and I start radiation on August 21 with five treatments. We’ll see how that goes.”

“We still have 12 horses here in Pavilion and five in foster care. Cali and Betty are in Pike undergoing training and Blue, Mykala, and Maverick are in Spencerport. It looks like Makayla and Maverick may have found new homes with Marial in their foster home.”

“We still need your help. I don’t know about my health right now. I am still trying to get things done but I don’t have the strength to do what I did before so vounteers are needed especially doing yard work. We need help taking care of the horses with feeding and grooming. We’re not able to do much fundraising because of physical limitations. We also need help with maintaining the facility such as painting, mowing and weed whacking. If you can help in any way please let us know.”

Mike and Chris Dodge
Founders

Mikes wife could not manage the rescue by her self and they would be forced to close once he passed. His final wish was that all of the horses that remained in their care would find forever homes before he passed. With the help of a lot of word of mouth in the horse community all of the horses have been taken in to new homes and/or sanctuaries.

Mike recently passed away after his long battle with cancer.

He was able to hear the good news before his passing, and left this world at peace.

Here are pictures of the horses that were at the rescue during its final days…the last horses Mike cared for… all of these horses were adopted and now have new care takers.

horserescue1We feel so blessed to have been able to help support this amazing program for horses. Mikes story will always be in our hearts. We will forever remember his selfless love for these majestic animals.

Rest in Peace Mike. We will miss you greatly.

…my later is right now…

sunset

I was speaking to a friend today who never goes on vacation. Ever. In fact she never leaves NYC unless she is going for work. She has lived there for her whole life.

I asked her how she was doing…and she said. “Fabulous. I am going to Rome & Croatia today.” I started laughing….”Really…ok…wow…I am so proud of you…you will love Rome. You have to live your life. Sometimes we leave things that we want to do for “later”. And then “later” we are too old and too feeble. Or life gets in the way and later never comes. No one wants to do Rome in a walker.

She said to me…”Yes. Finally I get. My later is not tomorrow anymore. My Later is Right Now.”…

I thought that was brilliant.

My Later is Right Now.

Not when I have time. Not when it is more convenient. Not next year. Right. Now. I have officially adopted this policy as of today.

XOXO

…tattoo love…

tattooOne of our favorite retailers Jen from Quirks of Art in Williamsburg, VA. sent us this recently. A customer of hers bought our Fear and Wisdom Bracelet which reads “to conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom…”. I love this quote desperately… and apparently he did too…as he had it tattooed on his wrist! His friends are also wearing the bracelet as they posed for this picture…what a great shot.

This is a testament to the power of words…and we are humbly honored to share this with you. Thanks to my friend Jen for sending this to us! We love hearing all of your inspirational stories!

XOXO
