…in the studio…

studiocolo11 Say howdy to our little studio family, well most of it anyways…

This is a little peak at our behind the scenes of what we do here at Island Cowgirl… working hard and putting a little bit of love into every design.

We have such a wonderful & committed team, it is such a blessing to show up to this little creative home every week.

We get to see fluffy faces like this….

and this….

However, you can count on a guilt trip from Miss Bonnie if you don’t plan on sharing your lunch! Who could say no to those eyes?

We are constantly in the building process in the studio, whether it be making the actual jewelry its self, shooting out emails, taking/making phone calls, photography, and of course playing sprinkler monster with Nigel.

Work for many people is simply a means to an end… or it just fills up the daily space. We are proud to say we love our work family and we will strive to maintain this awesome experience in the studio, just as we will continue to strive to bring you our version of cool boho jewelry.

heart cookies
With all of the love floating around in the air it seems there is no better time to share a gesture of love with the people in your life. And what is a better way to someones heart then through their stomache?

I’ve been hunting for the perfect cookie recipe to create cute cookies for my loved ones. The perfect sweet treat…

This is it! The funky decorative options really sold me!

I stumbled upon this recipe on pinterest… It’s super cute and I can’t wait to make my own!

You can follow the directions straight from the site and find more Valentines Day recipe ideas, or just use the Instructions from the site that I shared below.

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 cup sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Milk

  1. Beat shortening in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt; beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract until combined. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour with a wooden spoon. Tint and shape dough as directed for each cookie variation. Place cutouts 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Transfer to wire racks and cool. Makes 30 cookies.

  • Checkerboard Hearts and Bleeding Heart Cookies: Divide dough in half; divide one half in half again. Tint one quarter red and one quarter pink with food coloring. Wrap each portion in clear plastic wrap; freeze for 20 minutes. Divide plain potion into eight pieces. Divide each colored portion into four pieces. Roll each piece on a lightly floured surface into an 8-inch-long rope. Flatten each on four sides to form a square rope. For checkerboard design, place four ropes side by side on waxed paper, alternating colors with plain ropes. Top with four more ropes, alternating colors. Repeat two more times, forming an 8x8x2-inch dough block with a checkerboard pattern. Wrap in waxed paper and freeze 1 hour or until firm. Cut dough crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Cut a heart shape from each slice with a floured 2-inch heart-shape cookie cutter. Reserve scraps for Bleeding Heart Cookies. Bake as directed.
  • Checkerboard Hearts and Bleeding Heart Cookies: Mix dough scraps lightly with your hands so dough looks marbled. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface until 1/4 inch thick. Cut with floured 2-inch heart-shape cookie cutter. Bake as directed.

  • Inside-Out Cookies: Divide dough into three portions. Tint one portion pink and one portion red with food coloring. Roll dough, one color at a time, on a lightly floured surface until 1/4 inch thick. Cut with floured different size heart-shape cookie cutters. Using a smaller cookie cutter, cut hearts from the center of each cookie. Remove smaller hearts and interchange them so cookies have a contrasting colored heart in the center. Reroll dough scraps and repeat. Bake as directed.

More Variation

  • New Wave Cookies: Cover and chill dough for 2 hours or overnight. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface until 1/4 inch thick. Cut with a floured 3-inch heart-shape cookie cutter. Place cutouts about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake as directed. Transfer to wire racks and cool. Frost with Powdered Sugar Icing. Dry on a wire rack. Combine small amounts of the remaining icing and a few drops of desired food colorings. Place each color icing in a small sealable plastic bag. Decorate cookies with colored icings. Let dry.

…into the fire…

…helping hands…or paws…

This week around the studio we have been doing a photo shoot for our new website…It has been a lot of fun…but we battled some rain, some cold, a big praying mantis that kept buzzing us…but our biggest challenge was trying to keep Nigel out of the pictures. He assumed that it was playtime and kept covering the ground at our feet with toys.

This is the way it went…put on bracelet, pose model, arrange jewelry, throw dog toy and then very quickly try to snap the picture before said dog with toy bounded back into the frame…and ruined the picture. Needless to say we have more pictures of blurry white and grey fur than we do of jewelry. He especially liked posing with our doggie jewelry…Here you see him with our “Love Has Paws” bracelet.

Then of course we had to deal with this silliness…Bonny. Bonny doesn’t move much so we didn’t have to worry about drive by fur shots…however her sleeping poses were pretty distracting.

All in all we had a lot of fun with the photoshoot….and look forward to sharing all of these great new shots with you on our newly designed website! Lots of new inspirational jewelry & cowgirl jewelry coming up!

….I spent the weekend working with all the amazing new stones that I had collected…my studio looked like an explosion of color…

This is one of the pieces I made…chosing chunky nuggets of aquamarine that reminded me of the seas of Bali…I found them from one of my favorite stone dealers that always had the most unusual stones. A big bright sun reads “live in the light” on the back.

This necklace is a One-of-a-kind and is 19″ long and solid sterling silver. It is available by phoning our store at 714-580-9909. $245.

…working on the new Summer 2012 collection & the new catalog…here is some of the layout…So high tech! Oil pencils and crayons

The way it works is that we sketch out all of the new items that we are going to put in…and then we sketch out all of the one’s we think we are going to maybe put in…and then we make up samples of each.

At that point we do a first cut and figure out which one’s are fabulous…and which ones didn’t quite cut the mustard. Then we go through the previous year’s catalog and try to figure out which designs we are going to “retire”.

This process can go on for two months…if we are lucky! With many additions & subtractions! It is a fun process to see it all come together and it can also be extremely time consuming & difficult as designs we were sure were going to be the bomb…don’t quite come to life.

We hope to have the new catalog ready to ship at the end of June…Stay tuned!

…new & coming soon…

We have been hard at work making some new designs for our Spring 2012 collection….which should be available in January. This uber-awsome ring is called “Love’s Shield” meant to protect all those who are destined to wear it.

Our new inspirational bangles…stack them up high…or mix them up with our leather bracelets…I personally cannot wait to get one of these for myself…My favorite being “fortune favors the bold”

There is more to come…we will keep you posted as soon as they arrive!

Peace, Love & Horses…

…hearts & more hearts…

We are hard at work on our new collection for Winter 2012…which will be launching at the AmericasMart Gift Show & NYIG in January/February.

Hearts are the theme…and also are our best sellers! We discontinued a lot of our older hearts to  make room for the new ones…and you are going to LOVE them.

This is the wax for our newest bangle…on the inside it says “love your life with a true heart”.

Also, we are making TONS of new inspirational rings…I think there are 7 so far…here are our wax carvings of two new ones…I cannot wait to see how they will turn out…

It has been such a big joy to begin designing again with our silver plated line in mind….the sky is the limit…I no longer have to be as concerned about price points and if something is going to be too heavy or not. It has really freed me up to create some crazy beautiful new pieces…

Love, Peace & Horses…
