…postcards from hilton head…

Island Cowgirl Hilton headWe have the best customers. Yesterday I received a beautiful, heartfelt email from someone just reaching out to me in a random act of kindness. To let me know what Island Cowgirl means to her…and I am reminded again why I do what I do.

It is so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day chores of running a business and everything that goes into it…that sometimes we feel disconnected from what really matters. This is a common theme among my artist friends & I. We talk about this a lot. A LOT.

It meant the world to me that she took a tiny piece out of her day to write such a sweet email…and it pulled me back into the now, the present & reminded me that living in the moment is ever so infinitely important…so much so that I could almost smell the salt air and sun on my toes on that beach in Hilton Head.

Here is her letter:

Hi Gals!
I feel like we’re old friends now!
Thank you for ALL the wonderful jewelry; it makes me happy, everyday, to pick out my outfits based on the Island Cowgirl bling I’m wearing;) (and inspires me in my own work). I feel genuninely uplifted and joyful, wearing your pieces.  They are truly filled with VERY beautiful energy…thank you!  Enjoy the photo, taken from Hilton Head Beach, my neck of the woods on the opposite coast;) (starfish anklet). Peace & Blessings.

Thank you Sherry! You made my day.

…my later is right now…

sunset

I was speaking to a friend today who never goes on vacation. Ever. In fact she never leaves NYC unless she is going for work. She has lived there for her whole life.

I asked her how she was doing…and she said. “Fabulous. I am going to Rome & Croatia today.” I started laughing….”Really…ok…wow…I am so proud of you…you will love Rome. You have to live your life. Sometimes we leave things that we want to do for “later”. And then “later” we are too old and too feeble. Or life gets in the way and later never comes. No one wants to do Rome in a walker.

She said to me…”Yes. Finally I get. My later is not tomorrow anymore. My Later is Right Now.”…

I thought that was brilliant.

My Later is Right Now.

Not when I have time. Not when it is more convenient. Not next year. Right. Now. I have officially adopted this policy as of today.

XOXO

…back in the saddle…

What an amazing smile… right?

This is Cecilia. A friend of hers passed along her inspirational story and I am humbled to share it with you.

On July 4th 2010, when Cecilia was 17 years old she and her brother Joe were in a terrible and devastating car accident while heading home from their family farm. At some point during the drive the car lost control and in spite of Joe’s attempt to take control of the wheel the car spun out, and crashed in to a tree.

Cecilia, still conscious after the accident found her self cemented between the crushed steel of the car. Her legs were completely stuck and she looked over to the driver’s seat to see her brother Joe left completely unconscious, and his jaw entirely detached from his face.

Frightened and in shock, a sense of hope finally arrived with a team of firemen and paramedics. Their parents also made it to the scene, but were urged to go immediately to the hospital while the firemen worked on Cecilia and her brother Joe.

Cecilia remembers talking to her mother at the scene…

“She was going like hold on, it’s going to be alright, ” remembers Cecilia. “We’ll meet you in St. Louis and I was like Mom, don’t leave me. Don’t leave me here. And she had to go.”

It took two long and arduous hours to pry free Cecilia’s mangled legs from the strong steel of the vehicle. Once they were free from the car, both brother and sister were air lifted to the hospital. That night Cecilia was told that her brother Joe was most likely not going to make it, and if she did make it that her legs would probably have to be amputated.

Joe went into a coma, while Cecilia endured four surgeries in which she had 4 titanium rods and over 30 metal screws placed into her legs and right ankle. She then slowly began her journey on the road to recovery, with a great deal of physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Her tremendous courage pushed her to persevere through all that she faced. Cecilia always had a great love for singing and for riding horses. She sang through out her treatment and dreamed of one day being able to get back on her horse and go riding…

Her brother eventually came out of his coma 2 months after the accident, and is by some miracle on the long road to recovery, with minor memory difficulties.

After a year-long journey, with her will to overcome immense obstacles and the support she received from family and friends she is not only walking, but she is also saddling and riding her horse!

She wears our bracelet etched with the old cowgirl saying, ‘Always saddle your own horse’, as a constant reminder of what she has accomplished since her accident.

…back on the ranch…I mean beach…

Country Girl by the Sea

Cowgirl at heart…

Temperatures are definitely warming up here in sunny Southern California…after a bitter cold snap that I was worried was going to take out my beloved Hydrangea in the garden.

But here we have it…just blink once and the sun was shinning and all was good in the world.

It seems like the second the sun decides to come out the beach is flooded with people, and our little town of Huntington Beach bursts with life! It was the absolute perfect day to break out the beach cruiser for a boardwalk bike ride. And so i did!

In the middle of my ride, the sun was beginning to set above the ocean, so I decided to it was time turn back and head towards home. Right before I did I took a moment to appreciate the beauty around me. I sat on a cement wall, swinging my boots above the sand, feeling very blessed to live in a place where i can experience moments like this.

…one of a kind…high tide…

island cowgirl high tide necklace

….I spent the weekend working with all the amazing new stones that I had collected…my studio looked like an explosion of color…

This is one of the pieces I made…chosing chunky nuggets of aquamarine that reminded me of the seas of Bali…I found them from one of my favorite stone dealers that always had the most unusual stones. A big bright sun reads “live in the light” on the back.

This necklace is a One-of-a-kind and is 19″ long and solid sterling silver. It is available by phoning our store at 714-580-9909. $245.

…rejuvena-tion…

Island Cowgirl Flagship Store
We are coming up on our 4th year anniversary of our Flagship Store in Huntington Beach so we decided to give it a face lift….we ordered a bunch of new displays & proceeded to tear into the store one random Sunday afternoon…loaded with Starbucks (for fuel) and a toolbox (for our resident Bob the Builder).

We ordered a large vintage bakers rack which was assembled in the parking lot until we figured out it wouldn’t go through the door…and then it finally found a home in the corner. Right now we have it loaded up with one of our favorite artists Papaya…and topped with my trusty, rusty flying pig.

Next up was my vintage school book idea. Now not all of my ideas are good…and most of the time my peeps think I am crazy when I try to describe said ideas…but I am always willing to throw myself under the bus and try.

This one turned out well…we ripped apart every single jewelry case and added our custom rusted steel trays that we have been diligently rusting on the patio…and the vintage books. Thankfully it all worked together…otherwise I would be lugging home a lot of books & metal.

Whew…that was a lot of work…but so worth it…We are now ready for the summer crowds. Bring them on!

XOXO

…new & coming soon…

We have been hard at work making some new designs for our Spring 2012 collection….which should be available in January. This uber-awsome ring is called “Love’s Shield” meant to protect all those who are destined to wear it.

Our new inspirational bangles…stack them up high…or mix them up with our leather bracelets…I personally cannot wait to get one of these for myself…My favorite being “fortune favors the bold”

There is more to come…we will keep you posted as soon as they arrive!

Peace, Love & Horses…

…faux muppet…

This is Nigel. I awoke him from his nap that he was taking in my truck. Poor Nigel.

He looks so sleepy. And confused. And suprised. I just want to kiss his big muppet nose.
