…halloween @ the store…

hall1

There were so many fun halloween festivities this year we’re still reminiscing…

hall2

Its a Halloween tradition to pass out candy from our flagship store front, on Main Street in Huntington Beach. All of the local business partake in this huge event that brings the community together and allows the little kiddos to come out dressed up to trick or treat!

hall6

We saw some of the cutest little tots strolling for candy. This itty bitty crew composed of snow white, the evil queen and their monkey friend was one of our absolute favorites. They were so sweet and excited.

hall4

The kids weren’t the only ones having the fun. Our next door neighbor from the salon came as a head turning ‘Marge’ from the Simpsons. It was quite the get-up! She had everyone smiling and laughing

hall5…and of course it wouldn’t have been a true family holiday with out grandma Sheila and our furry kids. Bonnie was sneaking up from behind to steal some candy (the usual).

It was another wonderful holiday spent as an Island Cowgirl family.

…august adventure…

…postcards from hilton head…

Island Cowgirl Hilton headWe have the best customers. Yesterday I received a beautiful, heartfelt email from someone just reaching out to me in a random act of kindness. To let me know what Island Cowgirl means to her…and I am reminded again why I do what I do.

It is so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day chores of running a business and everything that goes into it…that sometimes we feel disconnected from what really matters. This is a common theme among my artist friends & I. We talk about this a lot. A LOT.

It meant the world to me that she took a tiny piece out of her day to write such a sweet email…and it pulled me back into the now, the present & reminded me that living in the moment is ever so infinitely important…so much so that I could almost smell the salt air and sun on my toes on that beach in Hilton Head.

Here is her letter:

Hi Gals!
I feel like we’re old friends now!
Thank you for ALL the wonderful jewelry; it makes me happy, everyday, to pick out my outfits based on the Island Cowgirl bling I’m wearing;) (and inspires me in my own work). I feel genuninely uplifted and joyful, wearing your pieces.  They are truly filled with VERY beautiful energy…thank you!  Enjoy the photo, taken from Hilton Head Beach, my neck of the woods on the opposite coast;) (starfish anklet). Peace & Blessings.

Thank you Sherry! You made my day.

…my later is right now…

sunset

I was speaking to a friend today who never goes on vacation. Ever. In fact she never leaves NYC unless she is going for work. She has lived there for her whole life.

I asked her how she was doing…and she said. “Fabulous. I am going to Rome & Croatia today.” I started laughing….”Really…ok…wow…I am so proud of you…you will love Rome. You have to live your life. Sometimes we leave things that we want to do for “later”. And then “later” we are too old and too feeble. Or life gets in the way and later never comes. No one wants to do Rome in a walker.

She said to me…”Yes. Finally I get. My later is not tomorrow anymore. My Later is Right Now.”…

I thought that was brilliant.

My Later is Right Now.

Not when I have time. Not when it is more convenient. Not next year. Right. Now. I have officially adopted this policy as of today.

XOXO

…happy 5 years to us!…

anniversary-1
Me & my girls! Thanks to my great staff for all the hard work! (Aren’t they cute?)

My heart is full right now. And my customers are the greatest. I just wanted to put that out there.

Last week we had a shindig at our little store by the sea to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We spent the day making sure everything was just perfect..we had gift baskets to pack and cakes to pick up and little gourmet appetizers to make…it was a group project to be sure…and all of my awesome employees were there to help.

Our goal was to make this a great thank you party to everyone who has supported us over the years. It was important to me that if someone took time out of their life to show up…that they were not disappointed. I believe each moment of everyone’s life is precious.

What really blew me away was how I ended up going away with more gifts than I feel we gave. A friend of mine, Bronny Dainiels, who is also a professional photographer was there snapping pictures of all of our goodies when I arrived. She managed to, completely unasked and unsolicited,  captured the spirit of our whole evening…start to finish. And the photos were in my inbox when I woke up.

Bronny Daniels- photographer extraordinaire…

Customers brought me flowers. They brought me heartfelt handmade cards. Food. Cupcakes. (Rice Krispies cupcakes which were gone in a flash…don’t worry…I am getting the recipe for all of you) Bottles of wine.

anniversary-4But most of all they shared stories with me. Stories of how they gave Island Cowgirl Jewelry as a gift to someone who needed inspiration. Stories of the artists they had discovered at the store and how much that meant to them. I heard over and over again…”We are so glad you are in Huntington Beach…we love your store so much”. Wow. Their overwhelming spirit of generosity was amazing.

One wonderful customer, when she learned that a portion of the days sales were going toward Sunkissed Acres Equine Rescue bought even more. Including a big wood starfish that she would have hand carry on the plane the next day on her trip back home to Florida. But she wanted to help the horses.

annivarsary-6The last gift basket of the evening was raffled off at 9PM. It went to a woman whose elderly mom had been there earlier. She said her mother often bought Island Cowgirl jewelry for her on her birthday…but that tonight she was a little short on funds and could not buy anything, but that she wanted to be at the party tonight to help us celebrate.

Her daughter had come back to the store in hopes that her mom may win the gift basket…because it would mean so much to her. And she did. I told her it was meant to be…anniversary-3And so everyone went home happy on this fine spring night…Me with my full heart. My peeps. And the horses. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Peace, Love & Horses,

~heather

…we LOVE our dawgs…

themanyfacesofnigel2

Oh…the many faces of Nigel. Also known as Nigelicious, Fat Face and Angel of Love…(AOL for short).

For those of you who don’t already know him, allow me to introduce our brand mascot Mister Nigel. Heather’s Old English Sheepdog…

And then of course there is Bonnie. Bonnie-Bell…who is not so amused at all by all the ruckus of the younger dogs here. She is a bit of an grumpy old lady…but we love her just the same.

All of us here at Island Cowgirl are dog lovers to the maximum degree. We believe dogs are just angels in dog costumes…and we love having them around. They make us laugh, give us a nice break in the day and most of all they are wonderful snugglers. Most of us have become impervious to dog slobber & dog hair…as a requirement of the job.

We are so blessed to work in a space that we can have our favorite animals running free, and stopping by to pay us little visits at our desks.

So much of our jewelry is influenced by this love of furry friends.

One of our favorites is our ‘Fur is Love’ Bracelet. It’s the perfect little ode to your best friend.

Dogs bring a smile to our faces and on a tough day… just make the world a little bit better.

If you are a dog lover, you know what we mean.

…back in the saddle…

ceciliaandherhorse

What an amazing smile… right?

This is Cecilia. A friend of hers passed along her inspirational story and I am humbled to share it with you.

On July 4th 2010, when Cecilia was 17 years old she and her brother Joe were in a terrible and devastating car accident while heading home from their family farm. At some point during the drive the car lost control and in spite of Joe’s attempt to take control of the wheel the car spun out, and crashed in to a tree.

Cecilia, still conscious after the accident found her self cemented between the crushed steel of the car. Her legs were completely stuck and she looked over to the driver’s seat to see her brother Joe left completely unconscious, and his jaw entirely detached from his face.

Frightened and in shock, a sense of hope finally arrived with a team of firemen and paramedics. Their parents also made it to the scene, but were urged to go immediately to the hospital while the firemen worked on Cecilia and her brother Joe.

Cecilia remembers talking to her mother at the scene…

“She was going like hold on, it’s going to be alright, ” remembers Cecilia. “We’ll meet you in St. Louis and I was like Mom, don’t leave me. Don’t leave me here. And she had to go.”

It took two long and arduous hours to pry free Cecilia’s mangled legs from the strong steel of the vehicle. Once they were free from the car, both brother and sister were air lifted to the hospital. That night Cecilia was told that her brother Joe was most likely not going to make it, and if she did make it that her legs would probably have to be amputated.

Joe went into a coma, while Cecilia endured four surgeries in which she had 4 titanium rods and over 30 metal screws placed into her legs and right ankle. She then slowly began her journey on the road to recovery, with a great deal of physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Her tremendous courage pushed her to persevere through all that she faced. Cecilia always had a great love for singing and for riding horses. She sang through out her treatment and dreamed of one day being able to get back on her horse and go riding…

Her brother eventually came out of his coma 2 months after the accident, and is by some miracle on the long road to recovery, with minor memory difficulties.

After a year-long journey, with her will to overcome immense obstacles and the support she received from family and friends she is not only walking, but she is also saddling and riding her horse!

She wears our bracelet etched with the old cowgirl saying, ‘Always saddle your own horse’, as a constant reminder of what she has accomplished since her accident.
